Shalaby Sundiata, born Rufus Richard Batts Jr., 75, passed away Friday, April 13, 2018 and peacefully transitioned to his eternal resting place. He was born February 16, 1943 in Norfolk, Virginia to the late Dorothy Ernestine (Fisher) Batts and Rufus Batts Sr. Shalaby was educated through the Norfolk Public School System. Throughout his Life he worked a myriad of jobs to include Long Shoreman and janitorial services and was widely known for his active role throughout his community.
At an early age, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, rededicated himself several times during his journey, before later converting to Islam.
Shalaby was a very passionate soft spoken man truly enjoyed sharing his life’s experiences with those his junior.
Left to cherish his memory are ten children;Tracey Elliott of Virginia Beach, Levell Batts of Virginia Beach, Tanyia Moore of Charlottesville, Demetric Jackson of Georgia, Tarius Pray of Norfolk, Carnet Horton of Chesapeake, Tara Moses of Norfolk, Yazmine Bracey of Norfolk, Jarshatrah Statton of Petersburg, and Chase Sundiata of Chesapeake;28 loving grandchildren, and 48 precious great grandchildren.one brother Clifford Lee Batts of New York. Two Uncles James Fisher of Maryland and George Fisher of Florida, and one Aunt Addie Whitaker of Norfolk, Virginia.
