Marshall Hinton died Saturday November 28, 2020 at his residence in Chester, Virginia

Marshall “Pete” Hinton, Jr. was the 5th child born to the late John Marshall Hinton, Sr. and Dorothy Lee Evans Hinton. He is survived by five siblings. “Pete” arrived on May 28, 1955 here in the city of Norfolk. He was reared and educated in Norfolk and attended Norfolk Public Schools. 

Upon leaving school, Marshall kept busy working in many capacities; here are just a few: HRSD (Hampton Roads Sanitation District), VA Beach; K& W Cafeteria, Norfolk,VA;  New Bethlehem Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ), Norfolk, VA; Penrod, Jurden & Clark; Norfolk, VA; Petro Gas; Norfolk, VA; Portsmouth Naval Yard; Portsmouth, VA; The Smokehouse; VA Beach, VA; Tires R US; Norfolk, VA; and Tyrone’s Construction & Demolition Services; Norfolk, VA.

Although Marshall worked at several places, his most important undertaking was as a member of the New Bethlehem Church. It was said that he joined this house of Zion about 25 years ago. In his tenure there he “Decided to Make Jesus his Choice”. Under the leadership of his Pastor Rev. Dr. Cynthia Buck, Marshall attended Advent Bible Study, sung with the Male Chorus, attended the North Albemarle Union Meetings (NC), sung with the Senior Choir, attended the Sunday School Convention, he was a Trustee of the Washington, NC District Assembly, and a Youth Chaperone.

“Pete” got his early church training at the Smyrna Church of Christ Holy Disciples (Norfolk) under the pastorship of the late Bishop Estelle Hodges.

Marshall was preceded in death by his parents, John Marshall and Dorothy Lee Hinton-Snowden; paternal grandparents Jessie Lee and Alice Gilliam Hinton; maternal grandparents Willie Oliver & Maggie Lucille Evans; son, Jamar Williams; great-grandson Se'von Bennett; sister Marsha Anne Forbes and brother Joe Willie Evans.

Left to cherish his memories, three daughters; Felicia Stark (Toris) of Elizabeth City, NC, Phyllis Bowman of Norfolk and Lisa Granger-Mullins (Joseph) of Chester, VA; four sons; Marshall Hill of Texas, Marshall Randall of VA Beach; Marcus Bowman and Joshua Williams both of Norfolk; 7 grandsons, 10 grand-daughters, and 6 great-grand children; 3 sisters, Gail Unuigbe (Felix) of Norfolk, Carol Lilly (Sidney) of VA Beach, Donnita Wyatt of Portsmouth; 2 brothers, Jessie Hinton and William Snowden both of Norfolk. Several aunts, great-aunts/great-uncles and cousins. 

“Pete” loved his family in his own way. He loved sports, card games, crabbing, cooking and most importantly, he loved to EAT!

Memories last a lifetime only if you share them.
