Emblem

Evelyn V. Hill, affectionately known as “Candy”, was called to eternal rest, surrounded in love, by immediate family on Wednesday, November 3, 2021. Our hearts were saddened as our loved one heard her Savior’s call.

Evelyn, made a special appearance on December 6, 1932, to Boston and Virginia Boyd-Mitchell in Princess Anne County, VA. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Willie E. Hill, (daughters), Evelyn P. Griffin, Phyllis Hill, Judy Johnson, and Linda Thomas; one son Maurice Boyd all of Virginia Beach.

Evelyn was a devoted housewife that loved to cook and take care of her family. She worked for the City of Virginia Beach for many years until her health would not allow her to. She was also a cook at many facilities in the Virginia Beach area.

She was a member of the Morning Star Baptist Church all of her life where she loved to “sing and praise” the Lord! Singing was her personal ministry. She sang with a well-known group called the Harps of Heaven out of Norfolk., Virginia. Later forming a family group named the Hill Gospel Singers along with her husband, children, and grandchildren. The Hill Gospel Singers traveled all around the Tidewater area and became well known even opening for major gospel groups in concert at the Norfolk Arena. The Hill Gospel Singers were also featured on a television show called Spread A Little Sunshine. She was a lead soloist of the Senior Choir and sang solos at various programs. She will always be remembered for the songs: “I’m Blessed”, “If You Can’t Help Me, Please Don’t Stop Me”, “Don’t Forget the Family Prayer” & “God Specializes”.

She leaves to cherish her memories with her daughters Barbara Boyd-Billups, Nadine Boyd, Cheryl Hill, Cathy Jones (Andrew), son-in-law Calvin Thomas; 26 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren, 88 great-great grandchildren, 1 great-great-great grandchild, a God-daughter Sandra Collins, her caretaker Diane Brown, along with a host of relatives and friends.
